There is so much to be said about the Ancient Mayan Civilization and their Ancient Civilization Timeline. The Ancient Mayans can be dated back to the 4th Ice Age. Here is a summary of the Ancient Maya Civilization with a Mayan Ancient Civilization Timeline from 11,000 BC up to the Post Classical Mayan Period.

Detailed Ancient Civilization Timeline BC

11,000 BC - 6,000 BC / Lithic Period During the Lithic Period it is believed that the people now known as the Mayan migrated across the Bering Strait. Some archeologists say they came from Asia, I am of the belief that they migrated via Egypt then to what we call Asia, then Siberia and Alaska into what we know was the Mayan Civilization Area. This area ranged from Mexico to Costa Rica and is called the Yucatan Peninsula. These first settlers were hunter and gatherers. By around 2,000 BC they learned how to plant crops such as maize, beans and squash. They lived in caves and opened campsites. By the end of this period they began setting up stationary villages. Obsidian spear points and stone tools as well as mammoth bones were found dating to 9,000 BC.

6,000 BC – 2,000 BC / Archaic Period

3114-3113 The creation of the world takes place according to the Mayan Long Count Calendar. Nomadic Hunter Gather sites Established. Horticultural and Shamanistic Skills developed.

2,000 BC to 250 AD / Pre Classic Mayan Period

2,000 BC- The development of the Olmec Civilization, which was adapted by the Mayan People and incorporated into Mayan Culture. Villages sprang up along the coastal areas of Southern Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. Slash and Burn agriculture is utilized as well as evidence of clay pottery. Mayan Language developed and spread. Monuments and other architecture begin to pop up. The cities started to develop. Temples were erected in the cities. Early glyph writing appears on Stelae (stone Slabs)

700 BC- Mayan Writing Is developed

400-BC- The earliest known solar calendars are found used by the Maya. They were stone carved

300-BC The Mayan adopted the idea of a hierarchal society incorporating kings and nobility. This was the start of the Mayan Class system

100-BC- Great Urban Mayan Cities Develop. The rainforest city of Teotihuacán is created. It remains as the center of culture, religion and trading for hundreds of years.

Ancient Civilization Timeline AD/Classical Mayan Period

100 AD- The decline of the Olmecs

400 AD- The pacific costal Maya start to decline while the lowlands and North Flourishes. The Mayan Highlands become under the domination of Teotihuacán. Early hieroglyphics merge into classical style with styles of the period.

500 AD- Tikal becomes the great Maya City. The citizens of Teotihuacán migrate there. They bring with them new ideas about weaponry, captives, religion and human sacrifice.

600 AD- An unknown event destroys the city of Teotihuacán. Tikal becomes the largest Mayan City. It still has tours to it today. Architecture flourishes in the lowlands. This period is the height of intellectual and artistic achievements. Warfare increases as well.

683 AD- Emperor Pacal dies at age 80. He is buried at the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque. It is still seen by tourists today.

751 AD- Mayan Alliances begin to break down. Interstate conflicts arise and trade breaks down.

899 AD- Tikal is abandoned.

900-AD The Classic Mayan Period comes to an End.

In the post classic period by the time of 1200 AD most of the Northern Mayan Cities were abandoned. Up into the Spaniard Conquistadors the Mayan continue to have internal conflicts and war. With the Spaniards came disease including small pox, influenza and measles. Within a century 90% of the Mayan population is depleted because of these illnesses.
